The untended garden becomes a jungle
That’s an Urdu saying I heard somewhere.
This is exactly what is happening to our garden. We had lots of large trees that were a nuisance and we cut them down. We have now mushrooms, “wild” flowers and all sorts growing now that there are not trees obscuring them. A empty piece of land, even if it is not really a garden is a still a lot of work.
It’s pretty obvious when you think of it but not full apparent that “more stuff is more work”. May be it’s a large house, a garden, empty piece of land, lots of digital devices, software on your computer, more files, photos of your child, home videos, clothes that you buy, the collection of shoes, the DVDs we bought, all the MP3 files. The bookmarks, the books, the news, the food we buy….
The tasks we pick up, the social circles, the increasing family, friends on facebook, colleagues on LinkedIn, the casual acquaintances on Twitter, the chat friends, the emails we receive. They are all cluttering up our life if we do not tend to it.
Entropy will make sure that we need to put some order and energy into it and maintain it. And there will come a time when we cannot maintain things enough.
There is this aspect of growing, earning, buying, collecting and organising and I think there is another aspect of simplifying your life. There are always at odds and it is a question of finding the middle path.
